چکیده

How the surface state (SS) develops and how the spin transport in a curved cylindrical topological insulator nanowire have attracted theoretical attention recently. However, experimental confirmation for the SS in such a real modeling system still remains insufficient. Here we carried out a systematic comparative study on the cylindrical single-crystal Bi₂Te₃ nanowires of various diameters, and report unambiguously dual evidence for the Dirac SS. Both the predicted anomalous Aharonov-Bohm (AB) quantum oscillations with a period of h/e in H(//) and the 1/2-shifted Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations (i.e., γ = -1/2) in H(⊥) were indentified below 1.4 K. In addition, Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak (AAS)-like oscillations with a period of h/2e and ordinary SdH oscillations with γ = 0 were also resolved. These data provide clear evidence of coexistence of the nontrivial topological Dirac state and trivial electron state on the surface of topological insulator nanowire.

A spin density wave in the topological insulator Bi2Te3

Topological insulators are materials with a bulk band gap, but with topologically protected, spin polarized surface states with Dirac dispersion. Bi2Te3 is such a topological insulator with a single Dirac cone at the center of the Brillouin zone. ARPES studies have shown that the Fermi surface of Bi2Te3 changes from a circle to a hexagon, and then to a hexagram, when moving away from the Dirac ...

Complex spin texture in the pure and Mn-doped topological insulator Bi2Te3.

Topological insulators are characterized by the presence of spin-momentum-locked surface states with Dirac points that span the fundamental bulk band gap. We show by first-principles calculations that the surface state of the insulator Bi2Te3 survives upon moderate Mn doping of the surface layers. The spin texture of both undoped and Mn-doped Bi2Te3 is much more complicated than commonly believ...

Anomalous Photoelectric Effect of a Polycrystalline Topological Insulator Film

A topological insulator represents a new state of quantum matter that possesses an insulating bulk band gap as well as a spin-momentum-locked Dirac cone on the surface that is protected by time-reversal symmetry. Photon-dressed surface states and light-induced surface photocurrents have been observed in topological insulators. Here, we report experimental observations of an anomalous photoelect...

Robustness of topologically protected surface states in layering of Bi2Te3 thin films.

Bulk Bi2Te3 is known to be a topological insulator. We investigate surface states of Bi2Te3(111) thin films of one to six quintuple layers using density-functional theory including spin-orbit coupling. We construct a method to identify topologically protected surface states of thin film topological insulators. Applying this method to Bi2Te3 thin films, we find that the topological nature of the...

Experimental realization of a three-dimensional topological insulator, Bi2Te3.

Three-dimensional topological insulators are a new state of quantum matter with a bulk gap and odd number of relativistic Dirac fermions on the surface. By investigating the surface state of Bi2Te3 with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the surface state consists of a single nondegenerate Dirac cone. Furthermore, with appropriate hole doping, the Fermi level can be ...
